For a while, I was so lost when it came to skincare, and though I’ve always had a routine, I’ve never had one specifically for my skin type. I was that chick still using St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub (since high school) at 25 to solve all of my issues. I, like most people, am slightly oily in my t-zone, yet everywhere on my face is extremely dry! Growing up with psoriasis all over my body, I’ve tried everything from oatmeal baths to prescribed ointments to regulate it. However, when it spread to my face, my dumbass kept hoping my St. Ives Apricot Scrub would come through for me. I honestly wish I had a picture of my face before I started using the items I’m about to show you. The Psoriasis on my face mainly gathered around my nose. I would wake up in the morning and literally have to peel the skin off of my face. Makeup looked horrible and cakey on me, so I gave it a rest until I found a solution. The items I’m about to show you are responsible for the amazing skin you all say I have.
Nubian Heritage Detoxifying Black Soap
So, before someone attacks me (someone always does to let me know) this isn’t 100% pure black soap. When black soap was introduced to me a few years ago, I received it in its purest form. Everyone swore by it and promised it would get all of the bad stuff out of my skin, tone and reduce dryness. I can say that they were right, but it worked a little too good! It stripped my skin of everything…good and bad which ultimately led to more breakouts.
Nubian Heritage Detoxifying & Balancing Black Soap is my go-to because it’s not 100% pure. I get the cleansing and healing properties of the black soap (as its base), and restoration with other infused ingredients like palm oil (loaded with vitamin E, & provides relief to itchy skin), coconut oil, plantain extract, etc. If you have dry and/or sensitives skin like me, try NH black soap, it’s truly the perfect balance. I use it every other day to wash my face. – Investment: $4.99
Pixi Beauty’s Glow Tonic Toner
“Do I even need a toner?” Yes and no. Again this all depends on the needs of your skin. I don’t use it every day, but if I’m feeling a breakout on the way or have an acne scar to get rid of I whip out the toner. Mind you, I use this on days I don’t use black soap, which has its own toning properties in it. If you plan on incorporating a toner into your routine, make sure to apply it in between cleansing and moisturizing. It’s going to dry your skin out, so have a bomb moisturizer ready to restore your skin. Pixi’s Glow Tonic – Investment: $15
Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream
Clinique’s Pep-Start Eye Cream is the best I’ve tried so far. After using it consistently for 3 days I noticed less puffiness around my eyes. I’m not sure how it will do with wrinkles or dark circles as those are not current struggle areas. Never tried an eye creme before? Here is a great place to start. If you have one you’d like to share with me, leave it in the comments. I’m so new to eye cremes and would love to try more. – Investment: $26.50
Clinique’s Moisture Surge
Clinique’s Moisture Surge is one of my favorite moisturizers ever. Its super lightweight, and leaves your skin super soft and supple. Have you ever applied a moisturizer that sits on top of your skin? Me too and it makes me want to peel my skin off. I hate when that happens. You have to worry about that here, your skin will drink this up! Investment: $52.50
Nubian Heritage Shea Butter Infused w/ AFS Extract
This right here is my secret weapon. If you have eczema, psoriasis, or severely dry skin/ patches give Nubian Heritage Shea Butter w/ African Black Soap Extract a try and I pray it works for you as well as it does for me. It’s completely gotten rid of the dry patches on my face, mainly around the nose and on my chin. Like I said above, I would wake up in the morning and have to peel/scrub the skin off my face. Natural Shea butter is already amazing for dry, sensitive skin. Adding the African black soap extract makes this a killer combo for stubborn skin conditions. Out of all the products I’ve shared today, if I had to pick one to use for the rest of my life hands down, this would be my choice. Investment: $13.99
Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparation | Personalized Skin Serum
A few weeks ago Kiehl’s invited me to there flagship store here in Atlanta to receive a complimentary skin assessment and a personalized Apothecary Preparations Serum. It’s created to combat specific issues you have with your skin. Which I was excited about because prior to their invitation, I never tried Kiehl’s products. I’ve been using the serum for about 2 weeks now and my skin has never looked or felt so smooth! It was determined in my skin assessment that I have dry/ sensitive skin and my concerns were texture and the new appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (since using has also reduced, thank God). If you are serious about getting your skin together and are concerned with one of the following, I highly recommend investing in your own personalized serum. They even put my name on the bottle with my own prescription code making refills a breeze! (i.e. Wrinkles, Texture, Clarity, Enlarged Pores, Redness) – Investment: $99 (So far, extremely worth it. Though my first bottle was complimentary, I will be purchasing a refill when it runs out. Which will also be a good time to switch it up should my skin concerns change between now and then.)
Don’t have a Skin Care Routine? I found this extremely helpful!
This gem was sitting on the table next to me while my serum was being made. While I use all of the items shown in this step-by-step, never have I in this order. I was completely unaware that it mattered when I applied what and in what order. Whether you plan on stopping by Keihl’s or not, use this to start building a skincare routine. The only thing I don’t have that I’ve been sleeping on is a good SPF. Feel free to let me know down below what your favorite sunscreen is as well!
When it comes to skincare, I have a hard time recommending products outside of what I know to be true for me and my skin type. It’s so complex! We could have the same skin type, tone, and texture yet the items that work wonders on my skin may do nothing for yours. Do your research to form a routine that works to the needs of your skin. Last but not least…
Mario Badescu Facial Spray w/ Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater
If you don’t have any of Mario Badescu’s Facial Sprays you are missing out. I use it to prep my skin for foundation and I keep one in my purse for a quick refresh when I’m out and about. Especially during those long, hot summer days. Feeling hot? Is your makeup caking up (I hope not)? This is your boost! Life in a bottle. – Investment $7
I hope this helps and while we are getting our bodies summer ready, let’s get this skin together too!
Until next time,
